Pop star Daler Mehndi lands in illegal immigration scandal

PATIALA: He is used to screaming fans but this was a new experience. Ending a three-week hideand-seek game with the Punjab Police, pop star Daler Mehndi, an accused in an illegal immigration scandal, surfaced at Patiala as directed by the Delhi High Court. 

Mehndi, with a string of diamonds in his turban, drove his Mercedes-Benz SUV to the Sadar police station but en route a hostile crowd lobbed eggs and wet plaster of Paris on his car while calling him a kabootarbaz. "It was a stage-managed mob trial," fumed his lawyer Ravinder Kumar. 

That is quite possible. The Patiala police are angered by Mehndi's earlier accusation that they had asked him for a bribe of Rs 1.5 crore, and are now making out a case for custodial interrogation. "We need him to entertain the inmates of the Patiala jail," chuckles a senior official. 

Mehndi, sensing the hostile mood, is demanding a CBI probe. "There are bigwigs involved in this," he told INDIA TODAY. It looks like Mehndi may spend more time in the courts than on the stage.
