PATIALA: A local court on Wednesday ordered framing of charges against Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi, his brother Shamsher and two others in a Kabootarbazi case. The charges were framed under sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC. Besides Daler and his brother Shamsher, two others against whom charges were framed are Bulbul Mehta and Dhian Singh. All the four were present in the court when the judge gave his verdict. The court fixed January 3 for recording of evidence in the case.
The human trafficking case was registered on October 19, 2003, following a complaint by one Bakshish Singh, a resident of Balvera village in Patiala district. In his complaint, Singh had alleged that he was duped by the Mehndi brothers on the pretext of sending him abroad as a member of pop singer's troupe.
Interestingly, though the local police had arrested the Mehndi brothers in the case, they had later given a clean chit to Daler Mehndi. On March 8, 2006, Singh's counsels had moved an application in the court, seeking summons to Daler as an accused in the case. Daler was issued summons for August 30, 2006. Meanwhile, the singer moved a revision application on December 9, 2006. The plea was dismissed on April 18, 2007. Daler's counsel Barjinder Singh Sodhi said they have applied for the certified copies of the case and would decide on future course of action only after examining them.
